Josephine (Shorts) Johnson

Josephine Shorts Johnson, age 86, of Gary, Indiana, passed away on Monday, March 11, 2024, with her family by her side. She was born on January 27, 1938, in Waterproof, Louisiana to Sylvester and Alma Coleman Shorts.

Josephine was a loving and devoted wife to her husband, Jimmie Johnson for over 40 years, and a wonderful mother to her children; they were her world. She loved spending time with her family, reading, laughing and talking with her dear friends.

She worked various jobs in her life: Indiana University, Slick Laundry, Hammond Valve, Amco, and Gary School system; just to name a few.

Josephine was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jimmie Johnson; her parents, Sylvester and Alma Coleman Shorts; 8 brothers, Fleming "Boe" Shorts, Joseph "Fat" Holmes, Jacob "Jake" Washington, Clyde "Duke" Turner, Willie Turner, Albert Turner, Robert Shorts, and Curtis Shorts.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her 8 children, David Cummings, Claudia Buckingham, Donald Cummings, Dennis (Darla) Cummings, Roger (Candis) Cummings, Vicki (Claude) Willis, Willa (Frank) Randle, and Felix Willis; 4 stepchildren; 22 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild; 2 sisters, Brenda (Tony) Rouse, and Alma "Dale" Coleman McGee; 5 brothers, Esau Washington, Johnny "Stormy" Coleman, Lee Andrew "Flip" Coleman, Cleandrew "Chopper" Coleman, and Thomas Shorts; and a host of other relatives and dear friends.

Visitation Wednesday, March 20, 2024, 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. with Homegoing Services 12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m. from Ridgelawn Funeral Home 4201 West Ridge Road Gary, Indiana 46408. Interment Ridgelawn Cemetery 4401 West Ridge Road Gary, Indiana 46408.
