Alsie R. Driver was born from the union of Sylvester and Louisiana Benson on April 17, 1923, in Millington, Tennessee. Raised in a Christian household, she came to know Christ the Lord at an early age. She was a member of New Revelation Baptist Church in Gary, Indiana for many years, and her lifestyle was a testament to her faith. She lived by her favorite quote that "God can do anything but fail".
Alsie was the same in her youth as she was in adulthood: intelligent, compassionate, family-oriented and loving. God blessed her with brothers, Sevell, Ernest and Theodore; sisters, Clara and Sufronia. She was especially devoted to her fraternal twin brother, Albert. In life, she remained close to him and the rest of her siblings, who have all preceded her in death.
An academically-able pupil, Alsie obtained her high school diploma from Barret's Chapel in 1941. During those years, she was particularly proud of her ability to dance well. By request from a local pillar of the community, she and her cousin would often perform astounding dance -moves for audiences at city-wide events.
On November 24, 1944, Alsie was united in holy matrimony to George Driver, Sr., to whom she referred by his middle name, Roger. They moved their growing family to Gary, Indiana in the decade of the 1950's and raised five beautiful children together: Melvin Driver, George Driver II (Trista Jackson-Driver), Shirley Driver Brown (Eldridge Brown II), Janette Brown (nee Driver), and Debbie Driver.
As a dilettante seamstress, Alsie-of course- had a flare and style. There was not enough red in the world to satiate her colorful spirit. There were not enough clothes in her closet to deter a weekend shopping excursion with her children. She was truly blessed to have been given a full and well-lived life.
In addition to her parents and siblings, Alsie R. Driver is preceded in death by her former spouse, and one son, Melvin.
She is survived by four children, George (Trista) Driver, II, Shirley Driver (Eldridge), Brown, II, Janette Brown (nee Driver), and Debbie Driver ;eleven grandchildren, Takiyah Driver, Tarik Driver (Millicent Driver), Aisah Brown, Michael Brown, II (Lolita Brown), Eldridge Brown, III, Chrystal Lathan, Anthony Brown (Lawanda Brown), George Driver, III, Shani Brown, Eldria Wiggins (nee Brown), and Brandon Driver (Nakia Driver).
In times of difficulty, Alsie would quietly assure to "put it in the hands of the Lord." It was an expression that she not only coddled into words, but she also breathed into life as a practiced way of living. She is now resting at the Comfort and Peace in the Hands of the Lord.
