Armella Caruthers, affectionately known as "Mella" and lovingly called "Mama" by many, was the heart of her family and the light of every room she entered. A woman of immense warmth, gentle wisdom, and timeless beauty. Mella lived a life rooted in love, laughter, and grace. On July 19, 2025, at the age of 95, she peacefully transitioned, leaving behind a legacy that will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
Born on June 7, 1930, in Gary, Indiana, to the late Barbara and John Greenwood. Mella was raised in a loving home and spent the majority of her life in Gary. She attended Roosevelt High School and grew into a woman known for her joyful spirit and the way she made others feel and deeply cared for everyone.
Mella was a beautiful and caring soul, her laughter could light up a room, and her presence brought comfort and calm. With a heart full of love, she welcomed many into her life and made them feel like family. She loved deeply, moved gently, and carried herself with a grace that left a lasting impression. Her spirit was joyful and lighthearted, and she was known for her ability to laugh through life with unwavering faith and strength.
She was preceded in death by her sons, Maurice Caruthers and Arthur Caruthers; her great-granddaughter, DeShanna Caruthers; her siblings, John Greenwood, Leatrice King, Nathaniel Greenwood, Arthur Greenwood, Irene McKinney, and Irma Thornton; and her parents, Barbara and John Greenwood.
Among those cherishing her memory are her devoted son, Nathaniel Caruthers; her daughter and caregiver, Cynthia Caruthers; her granddaughters, Carol Caruthers, Kimberly (Hal) Bergee, and Natalie Caruthers; nine great-grandchildren; fourteen great-great-grandchildren; her beloved siblings, Donald (Bernetta) Greenwood and Ronald (Emma) Greenwood; and many other relatives and dear friends.
Mella leaves behind a family and community who will carry her memory with love and gratitude; remembering her as a woman who gave so much of herself to others and asked for little in return.
If Mella could leave us with one final message, it would be simple and true- "I Love You".
Her loved ones will celebrate her life on Monday, July 28, 2025, from 12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m. at Ridgelawn Funeral Home 4201 West Ridge Road Gary, Indiana 46408. Interment immediately following at Fern Oaks Cemetery 1518 East Elm Street Giffith, Indiana 46319.
