Suffragan Bishop George Lee Stearnes, age 99, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 20, 2023, at Symphony of Crown Point in Crown Point, Indiana. He was born to the union of Anthony Sr. and Clifford (Phillips) Stearnes, on July 25, 1923, in Gadsden, Alabama. He moved to Gary with his family when he was two years old. Bishop Stearnes was a 1944 graduate of Roosevelt High School. On June 20, 1945, he was united in holy matrimony to Myrtis Smith of Phenix City, Alabama. Bishop Stearnes was a veteran of the United States Army, and served in Fort Benning, Georgia and Nuremburg, Germany. For over 55 years, he devotedly served as Pastor of the Logan Park Assembly of Christ before his retirement in 2019.
Bishop Stearnes is preceded in death by his parents, and all of his siblings: Anthony, Jr., Catherine, and Robert.
He survived by his loving wife, Myrtis Stearnes; his only daughter, Linda (Keith) Eller of Merrillville, Indiana; granddaughters, Joi-Lyn Eller of Belleville, Michigan and Keisha Lyn (Darzel Jr.) Price; great-granddaughters, Nyla- Kerrington and Jordyn- Klaire Price, all of Merrillville, Indiana; sister-in-law, Bennetta Stearnes of DeKalb, Illinois; and a host of nieces and nephews, extended family and friends; and the Logan Park Assembly of Christ family.
Visitation Friday, March 10, 2023, from 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. with Homegoing Services Saturday, March 11, 2023, 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. All services will be held from Logan Park Assembly of Christ 1513 Polk Street Gary, Indiana. Interment with Military Honors at Ridgelawn Cemetery.
