Casper Jones, Jr. Obituary

Casper Pierce Jones, Jr. was born on September 22, 1924, in Gary, Indiana to the late Casper Pierce Jones, Sr. and Annie Washington Jones. He was the oldest of five siblings. He peacefully passed away on Friday, December 15, 2023, at the age of ninety-nine. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothene Trotter Jones, his brothers, Richard Jones, Sr., Harold L. Jones,Sr., and Percy G. Jones.

Casper graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1945 and was a World War II Navy veteran. Following his military discharge, he attended Indiana University on the GI Bill and majored in music. On June 15, 1952, he was wed in holy matrimony to Dorothene Trotter and from this marriage: Casper Pierce Jones, III and Andrea Renee Jones were born. Soon thereafter, he began his career as a Gary Firefighter. During his tenure, he was promoted to the rank of Captain, as the city's fire dispatcher and later retired in 1983.

Casper was a former member of St. Luke AME Zion Church where he served as the Financial Secretary of the Trustee Board. In 1967, he joined Greater St. James AME Church where he faithfully served as a Trustee Board member, President of Usher Board #1, and President of the Community Club. Over time, physical disability restricted his mobility, and he could not physically attend services. However, he remained connected via the loving and ongoing outreach of devoted members.

Anyone who truly knew Casper would tell you of his passion for jazz, education, history, and love for his family. He was a member of Musician's Guild 203 AFM and played lead trumpet in the Lester Shackelford Band and other Chicago jazz bands for several years alongside his colleagues: Sykes Smith and Richard Carther.

Casper is survived by his children, retired Colonel Casper P. III (Cocoa FL.) and Andrea R. Jones-Jones (Warrenville, IL); caring sister, Jessie Cain (Gary, IN); loving and loyal sister-in-law, Jamesella (Tommie) Ford (Gary, IN), and her sons, John S. Ford (Chicago, IL.) and Michael W. Ford (Chicago, IL.); phenomenal caregiver, Doretha Copeland (East Chicago, IN.); and a host of nieces, dear relatives, and friends. While physically disabled, Casper received superb care from a host of caregivers, CNAs, LPNs, RNs and NPs who provided the care and compassion that helped make his days so enjoyable.
