Cayetano Salazar

Cayetano  "Ito" Salazar, age 100, of Portage, Indiana and formerly of the Brunswick area, passed away Thursday, March 3, 2022, with his loving family by his side. 

Cayetano was born May 24, 1921, in Ocotlan, Jalisco Mexico to the late Pedro and Margarita Salazar, the oldest of fourteen children. In Apeil of 1944, he married the love of his life, Bernardina Ramos.

Cayetano retired fron Inland Steel as a Hot Bed Operator in # 2 Billet Mill.  After retirement, he spent his days fishing at Jellystone in Portage.  He was so proud of having his picture posted in the Ranger station for catching the biggest fish in their record book.  He also enjoyed gardening, growing his own vegetables; as  well as raising chickens, rabbits, and birds.  he also rescued many dogs.  He left behind Chico, his pet chihuahua, his last rescue.  Chico did have a last visit with him in the hospital the day before his passing, and he already misses him.

Cayetano is survived by his children: Esther (Tiburcio) Herrera, Dolores Aragon, Paul Salazar, Antonio Salazar, Maria Lecea, and Carmen (Edwin) Gonzalez; grandchildren, Michael, Richard, Adam, Bernadette, Liza, Terrence, Melissa, Antonio, Jr., Victoria, Adolfo, Paul, Robert, Jr., Laura, Israel, Alexander, Edwin, Jr., Laura, and Lydia; great-grandchildren, Samantha, Alyssa, Jaelynn, Alexia, Gage, Brooklyn, Remington, Ryan, Nathan, Hailey, Brooke, Alex, Jr., Joseph, Xavier, Isabella, Rebecca, Gisele, Alicea, Abigail, Zoey, Andres, Lilyana, Marissa, Cayden, Emma, Hannah, Richard, Terrence, Genevieve, Saul, Rachel, Sael, Yesenia, Yazmien, Louie Jr., Bianca, Lorenzo, Lilliana, Natalia, Adeliz, Ava, Alivia,  and Brian Jr. ; great-great grandchildren, Azalea, Annalia, and Landon.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Bernardina; first born daughter, Dolores; grandson, Joseph Daniel; and great-grandson, Evan.

Cayetano will be deeply missed by family and friends.  May God Grant Him Eternal Rest.

Visitation will be Friday March 11, 2022  11:00 am.-12:00 p.m. with Funeral Mass 12:p.m. -1:00 p.m. from Ridgelawn Funeral Home 4201 West Ridge Road Gary, Indiana 46408.  Interment Ridgelawn Cemetery.
