DeVonne Lewis, age 88, of Merrillville, IN., went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 24, 2021. DeVonne was born and raised in the Lafayette, IN. area. He was a resident of Merrillville, Indiana for 48 years. DeVonne was an Army veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict. He earned his Bachelor of Theology degree from Indiana Baptist College, Indianapolis, Indiana. DeVonne worked as a brick-layer for over 40 years and was an active member of the Bricklayers Union Local No. 6. DeVonne enjoyed playing and watching sports. During his high school years, he was the star of the Monitor High School basketball team. He was an avid Chicago Bulls fan, and known to beat any family member at a game of H-O-R-S-E or croquet. Most of all, DeVonne deeply loved the Lord. He was an active member of Dyer Baptist Church and served on the deacon board for many years. He was a man of great character, hard work-ethic, and devoted to his wife and family. His kindness and sincerity will be dearly missed by his family, church, neighbors, and many friends.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Ruth Anna Lewis; Seven children; daughter, Loretta (David) Nelms, daughter, Connie (Chris) Carter, daughter, Bonnie Haden, daughter, Kim Jarrell, daughter, Cheryl (Jeff) Colsten, son, Sam (Patricia) Lewis, and daughter, Jennifer (Tom) Donovan; sister, Joyce Loft; Twenty- three grandchildren, twenty three great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Eva Lewis; three brothers; Van Lewis, Adren Lewis, and Gene Lewis; five sisters, Lorraine Waggoner, Donola Hysong, Eileen Carson, Betty Fetrow, and Agnes Hardesty; and his son-in-law, Eugene Haden.
Friends are invited to meet with the family for a time of visitation on Friday, January 29, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. till 12 noon at Dyer Baptist Church, 735 213th St. Dyer, Indiana. The funeral service will follow the visitation at 12:00 noon, also held at Dyer Baptist Church.
Private family burial will take place at Memory Lane Memorial Park, Crown Point, Indiana.
