Dennis Harvey Obituary

Dennis Harvey was born on September 1, 1947, in East Chicago, Indiana. He was the fourth of nine children born to James and Ruby Harvey. He confessed Christ and was brought up in church from an early age. Dennis, affectionately known by his family and friends as "Foots", grew up in the New Addition section of East Chicago and attended Washington High School.

A proud U.S. Army veteran, Dennis was drafted into military service and saw combat as a radio operator during the war in Vietnam. After his service, Dennis met Sally Steeb of Lansing, Illinois, and the two were married on August 15, 1970, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in East Chicago. To this 54 year union were born two sons and five daughters. Dennis and Sally raised their family in Gary, Indiana, and made their church home at Agape Ministries under Pastor Larry Hankel, and Spirit of God under Pastors Victor Davis and James Middleton.

Dennis majored in sociology at Purdue University. For many years, he was employed as a guidance counselor at the Katherine House Boys and Girl's Club in East Chicago. He also worked for years as a steelworker at Cargill Steel & Wire before retiring from the Indiana Department of Corrections.

Dennis was an avid sports fan who was devoted to Chicago sports teams, especially the Chicago White Sox, Bears and Bulls. He was a talented vocalist who performed live for years with "The Enchanters" around Chicagoland. He coached and umpired for Little League teams in Northwest Indiana for many years. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and enjoyed cruise vacations with his dear wife, Sally.

Dennis passed away in his home on September 23, 2025. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sally Leah Harvey; parents, James and Ruby Harvey; brothers, Murray Harvey, James Harvey, Jr., and Steven Harvey; sisters, Dorothy Flowers and Barbara Love.

He leaves to cherish his memory: loving children, Justin Harvey of Indianapolis, Indiana; Aimee Harvey of Chicago, Illinois; Molly (Milton) Reed of East Chicago, Indiana; Amanda Harvey of Gary, Indiana; Jessica (David) McCaney of Las Vegas, Nevada; Timothy Harvey of Gary, Indiana; and Jennifer Harvey of Chicago, Illinois; beloved grandchildren, Cantrell "CJ", Jaylen, Jacqualine, Josiah, Jabez, Jakai, Jason, Autumn, Chanel, Brielle, and Maverick; great-granddaughter, Navy; dear siblings, Betty Harvey, Ralph Harvey and Kenneth Harvey; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Dennis will forever be remembered as a hard-working, compassionate, strong and God-fearing man who loved his family, served his country, led by example and sacrificed for his children and grandchildren.
