Gary Mantz Obituary

Gary Robert Mantz, a lifelong resident of Gary (Miller Beach). Gary worked at US Steel for over 50 years. He enjoyed golf, tennis and for many years was an avid bicyclist, often repairing local kids bikes for free, or building bikes for friends for a case of beer. He could finish The New York Times crossword puzzles in pen, and later in life, sudokus. He loved the Chicago Bears, the White Sox, and whoever was playing the Cubs.

Gary had a man cave before it was coined as such, which we affectionately called the "Mole Hole". It was here that Gary would hold court at the old soda fountain bar, playing video games, or watching his favorite sports/races on the two TV's he had set up, while listening to music on his impressive stereo. Gary Mantz was always quick with a quip, or a turn of phrase that was usually comical.

He was the oldest son of Gerald Oliver and Olive (nee LaLonde) Mantz, and was married to his love, Sharon M. (Julian) Mantz, all whom preceded him in death.

Gary is survived by his beloved daughters, Sherri (Phillip, deceased) Cyprian, Susan Motto, and his baby girl, Shannon (Nick) Drakulich; brother, Rick L. (Carolyn) Mantz; his stepchildren, Joshua Cody (Courtney) McCoy, Jacob McCoy, Krystal McCoy, and William (Michelle); along with many beloved grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Gary was generous, humorous, and benevolent man, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, and will greatly missed by all.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Gary on September 22, 2024 from 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. at the Speakeasy Spa/Pizzeria Unos in Porter, Indiana . We will also have the game on and will be wearing our Bears attire, something we know he would love.
