Obituary

Henry William Lee, Sr. finished the race on April 16, 2023. Now resting in heaven by his Savior's side. Henry was born as one of nine children on May 4, 1933, to William Lee Sr. and Geneva (Carter) Lee. 8 Siblings preceded him in death. Marie, Nathaniel, Aaron, Bertha, Frances, William Jr., Vivian, and Loyell. A graduate of Roosevelt High School class of 1952. Henry Lee Sr. married the love of his life, Birdie Mae Lee, on November 21, 1954, together for 68 years, three children were born to this union, all from Gary, Indiana.

Affectionately known as "Uncle One Penny" by one of his nieces, Henry Lee Senior was an avid bowler, golfer, and traveler. Many remember when he would load up his station wagon and travel to Enchanted Forest and other picnics with family and friends. He was commended for his 42 years of federal service during his career. During his twenty years in the United States Navy, while serving in Norfolk, Virginia, the Philippines, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal 5 times. After retirement from the Navy, Henry and his family moved back to Gary, Indiana, permanently, his family has had the same house and phone number for 51 years. henry worked in the Westside High School Attendance office and for the Bank of Indiana for several years before accepting a position at the United States Postal Service as a Maintenance, Tools and Parts Clerk. He performed his duties well for 22 years, before retiring permanently.

Henry accepted Christ early and joined First Baptist Church with his mother. Later in life, he joined and was baptized at New Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church with his wife and children. Under the leadership of Pastor Chet Johnson, Sr. henry was a faithful member, enjoying teaching Sunday School to adults and youth, served as Men's Day finance chair, and was named an Honorary Deacon. He loved the church and the fellowship with other deacons.

He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Birdie; his three children, Geneva (Lee) Thomas, Henry Lee, Jr., and Brenda lee-Peel; 8 grandchildren, Angelita Thomas, Jamar Thomas, Henry (Taunia) Lee, III, Prentice Lee, ReChard (Brandi) Peel, Vanessa Lee, and Rosalyn Lee; brother-in-law, Ronald Vaughn; three sisters-in-law, Johnnie Hamler, Armetria Gibson, Carolyn Wise; and a host of loving step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Visitation Monday April 24, 2023 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m with Homegoing Services 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. from New Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church 2416 Pierce Street Gary, Indiana.  Interment with Military Honors from Ridgelawn Cemetery Gary, Indiana 46408.
