Ifrael Alvarez Sr. Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Ifrael Alvarez, Sr., a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who peacefully left us on March 17, 2025, at the age of 84. Ifrael's journey began in Esmeralda, Cuba, on July 15, 1940. He was born to Andres Alvarez Morgado and Bertila Perez Rodriquez, and was raised alongside three brothers and four sisters in a loving and hardworking family.

Ifrael met the love of his life, Arelys Cespedes Bernardez at a dance in Camaguey, Cuba. Their love story began that day, and they married on December 4, 1963. Together, they embarked on a remarkable journey that would ultimately lead them to the United States in search of a better future for their family.

In the summer of 1971, Ifrael, Arelys, and their two sons, Ifrael, Jr., and Iraldo, left Cuba, making the difficult journey to America. Ifrael spent time in a work camp to ensure his family could experience the freedoms and opportunities he so deeply desired for them. By fall of that year, they settled in the United States, and Ifrael began working at Inland Steel. They would later expand their family with their son, Ismel and daughter, Idalmys. He would dedicate 30 years of loyal service to Inland Steel before retiring.

Throughout their marriage, Ifrael and Arelys were inseparable, celebrating 61 years of love and companionship. They spent over 40 years in their home on Lewis Street, where countless birthdays, barbecues, and New Year's Eve parties brought together a community of friends who became like family. Ifrael's love for his family was evident in everything he did-his pride in becoming and American citizen, his unwavering devotion to his children, and his joy in seeing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren thrive. He proudly attended games, plays, and graduations, and his presence was always a source of joy and encouragement.

Ifrael's legacy is one of hard work, love, and strength. He will forever be admired for his commitment to his family, his infectious smile, and his ability to share the rich history of their heritage with each generation. He was an avid sports fan, especially of boxing and baseball (GO CUBS !). He cherished family vacations, creating lasting memories with his loved ones, and always found time to visit Cuba, where his roots remained. A highlight was the family's unforgettable trip to Las Vegas in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary.

Above all, Ifrael's greatest pride was his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, especially for the way he showered his family with love, his warm hugs, and his lasting wisdom. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication, love, and devotion that will continue to inspire those who were fortunate to have known him.

Ifrael is preceded in death by his father, Andres Alvarez Morgado; his mother, Bertila Perez Rodriquez; and his sister, Mibia.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Arelys Alvarez; his sons, Ifrael, Jr. (Pam), Iraldo (Cynthia), and Ismel (Jennifer); his daughter, Idalmys (Francisco); his brothers, Valdo, Andres, and Mario; and his sisters, Elvia, Merey, and Aleida. Ifrael is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom will cherish his memory.

Ifrael Alvarez was a remarkable man who embodied love, strength, and the importance of family. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. We will forever carry him with us, in every story we tell, every moment we share, and every moment we cherish.
