Our beloved, Iris D. Russi, transitioned into glory on December 20, 2023, age 70. Born in Humacao, Puerto Rico, Iris was raised in Gary, Indiana, and is an alumnus of West Side High School Class of 1971. She is survived by her son, Isaac Angelo Torres, her grandson, Benito Torres III (Tré) whom she lovingly called Gordo, her siblings, Julio C. (Sonia-deceased) Russi, Aida L. (Adiel-deceased) Jaime, Maria L. (Ivan) Agosto, Henry (Rosa-deceased) Russi, Cecilio (Leticia) Russi, Jr., Teresa (Miguel) Irizarry, Elias (Gina) Russi, and Madeline (Jesus) Correa, her godchldren; Julio (Spooky) Agosto, Jr.; Consuelo (Coni) Rodriguez-Taslim, and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Benito Torres, Jr., her mother, Carmen A. Malavé, and her father, Cecilio Russi.
She graduated from Indiana University Northwest in Gary, Indiana, with a master’s degree in education. She loved teaching and was a long-term teacher at Lincoln Elementary in East Chicago, Indiana. Iris was a devoted member of Hope Christian Church in Hammond, Indiana. Her favorite pastimes were playing Bunco and traveling with her friends. Iris’s church and Primerica families were near and dear to her. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.
Visitation will be Thursday, December 28, 2023 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with the Funeral Service from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at Ridgelawn Funeral Home 4201 West Ridge Road, Gary, Indiana. Interment immediately following services at Ridgelawn Cemetery.
