Jerry Akers, 76, of Hobart, Indiana, passed away on May 28, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loving family after a hard- fought health battle.
Jerry was born in Hammond, Indiana on July 1, 1948, to Clarence and Margie (Nelson) Akers.
He wed Brenda (Cottrell) on September 15, 1972.
Jerry is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 52 years, Brenda; three children, Christina Akers of Gary, Indiana, Melissa (Thomas) Toth of Gary, Indiana, and Justin Akers of Portage, Indiana; four grandchildren, Macie Wadkins, Madison Wadkins, Mason Akers, and Brooke Toth; sister, Sue Austin; brother, James Akers; sisters-in-law, Janice Cottrell and Angela Puentez; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins whom he loved greatly.
He is preceded in death by his son, Jerry Lee Akers, Jr.; parents, Clarence and Margie, three brothers, Robert, William, and Donald Akers.
Jerry was a proud Army veteran, serving in Germany from 1968-1971. He was a longtime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Monticello, Indiana. He served as a school board member of Lake Ridge Schools from 1998-2008.
Jerry loved spending time with his family, his pets, playing bingo and listening to music. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, from 3:00p.m.-7:00 p.m. with Funeral Services on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Both services held at Ridgelawn Funeral Home 4201 West Ridge Road Gary, Indiana 46408. Interment Mount Mercy Cemetery 4401 West Ridge Road Gary, Indiana 46408.
