Joan S. Gutierrez, known as Ahnie, was a loving sister and aunt, who at the age of 90 passed away peacefully while in hospice care at the home of her niece, where she was surrounded by deep love and gratitude. Born on September 3, 1935, in East Chicago, Indiana, Joan lived a life defined by devotion- to her faith, her family, and the countless people whose lives she touched.
Joan dedicated 24 years of service to the Hammond Clinic in Munster, Indiana, where she worked as an ultrasound and X-ray technician. Prior to that, she spent 13 years at St. Margaret Mercy Hospital in Gary, Indiana. Her work reflected her gentle spirit and her commitment to caring for others with patience, skill, and compassion.
A devout Catholic, Joan was a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Guadalupe, where her faith guided her daily life and sustained her through every season.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Dolores (Sanchez) Gutierrez; father, Jose Gutierrez; sisters, Carmen (Gutierrez) Alfaro and Frances (Gutierrez) DeHoyos; and brother, Philip Gutierrez.
Joan leaves behind her beloved sisters, Guadalupe (Gutierrez) Leonard and Josephine (Gutierrez) Gudino; her niece, Joannie (DeHoyos) McCrimmon (Calvin), who was like a daughter to her; and her nephew, Jose M. DeHoyos (Kelly), who was like a son. She is also survived by her cherished grand-nephews, Ruben Napules, II, Colin McCrimmon, Michael DeHoyos, Jose M. DeHoyos, Jr.,; grand-niece, Marianna DeHoyos; two great- great nieces; Lily and Viviana DeHoyos; great-great nephew, Matteo DeHoyos; and many other nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews across the country, all of whom she adored.
Her loyal cat Chaca, remained faithfully by her side until her final day, offering comfort and companionship in the way only a beloved pet can.
Joan will be remembered as an extraordinary aunt-caring, patient, and endlessly loving. She spent countless hours reading books, playing chess, and enjoying board games with her nieces and nephews, creating treasured memories that will be passed down through generations. Her presence was a gift, her love a constant, and her legacy one of warmth, kindness, and unwavering devotion to family.
Visitation will be Thursday, January 15, 2026, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. from Ridgelawn Funeral Home 4201 West Ridge Road Gary, Indiana 46408. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided. A private family cremation will be held at a later date.
