John M. Harbin was the third child born to Fennon, Sr. and Poncella Harbin on November 3, 1948, in East Chicago, Indiana. He was a graduate of Tolleston High School, class of 1966. After graduating high school, John worked alongside his father at Penn Central Conrail Railroad as a switchman, eventually obtaining the position of Freight Conductor. In a life change, he moved on to Amtrak where he became a Passenger Conductor.
In 2006, he received a Certificate Of Recognition in appreciation for 20 years of his dedicated service to Amtrak. He served a total of 43 years as a part of the Railroad Team. Throughout this journey he gained an abundance of lifelong friends.
To know John, was to know a gentle, kind, and warm spirit. His smile radiated an immediate welcome, and that great sense of humor, left a big imprint on the hearts of many. He was a man of many talents and interests. He loved playing his guitar, woodworking, carpentry, lawncare, and researching automobiles. His favorite pass time was listening to music for many hours.
He is survived by his loving wife, Francine Harbin, three daughters, Teysha Harbin, Kimberly H. Duronslet, ( 1st marriage to Elaine Dixon) and Shamaria; two sons, John Richard and Kendell Harbin (his adopted children); three sisters, Angela Miller, Cassandra Nichols, Regilana Washington; and a host of grandchildren; nieces; and nephews; and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Fennon and Poncella Harbin, Sr.; brother, Fennon Harbin, Jr.; sister, Roherra Sanders-Barnes; and step-daughter, Kimberly Botts.
I'd like the memories of me to be happy ones, and that I have left an echo that whispers soft memories of happy times and moments of laughter on bright and sunny days. I'd like the tears of those who grieve me to dry before the sun. Live with happy memories that I left when my life was done.
