John Lowe was born September 18, 1933, in Opelika, Alabama to the late Jim Charles, Sr. and Rachel Lowe. Soon after John was born, the family moved to Gary, Indiana.
John attended Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church. He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized in 1947. Seventy years later, John was still a faithful member of the Jerusalem family.
John grew up in Gary, Indiana where he received his education at Lincoln Elementary School and graduated from Roosevelt High School. He also attended Purdue University and Indiana University, where he received several certificates.
John married his schoolmate, Irma, and they enjoyed 71 years of marriage. Although they have faced hills and mountains, through it all God smiled on them and their marriage. They are the parents of two daughters, Annette, and Toni; two sons, John Jr. and Lawrence.
John was a hardworking man; he was employed at Scot Lad Food Corp. in Lansing, Illinois for 35 years. He worked his way up the corporate hierarchy to become the first African American Vice President of operations. In 1989 his love of the game of golf propelled him to accept the position of golf manager at South Gleason Golf Course. He worked at the golf course for over 20 years until his retirement.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Charles, Sr. and Rachel Lowe; his siblings, Jim Charles, Jr., Janie Mae, Viola, William, George, Dorothy, Rachel; and Walter; his son, Johnny; daughter, Annette, and granddaughter, Tasha.Lowe. John was the last living member born of Jim Charles and Rachel Lowe.
