Jose "Jr." Velez Perez, 77, of Hammond, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, with his beloved family by his side. He was born on December 15, 1947, in Lares, Puerto Rico to the late Jose "Pin" Velez and Olga Perez.
He worked as a crane operator at Arcelor Mittal in East Chicago, Indiana and retired in 2010.
Jose is survived by his beloved wife, Carmen "Mela" Perez of 54 years; son, David Perez and Edwin "Ito" Perez and Damaris (Dolly) Perez; he was a beloved brother to Miguel (Crystal) Velez, Ruben (Mitzie) Velez, Iris (late Juan) Camacho, Anna (Carmelo) Alicea; and numerous nieces and nephews. Giovanni Vasquez shared a special bond with Jose.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Blanca and brother-in-law, Cruzito Alvarez. He was a member of Iglesia Pentecostal Emanuel in East Chicago, Indiana and enjoyed spending time with numerous friends. Jose was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan.
Jose loved family time, puzzles, wrestling, watching western movies and playing dominos. He will be remembered for his jokes. The Three Stooges was one of his favorite TV shows. He always put a smile on the faces of those around him.
Visitation will be Wednesday, May 28, 2025, from 4:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. with Funeral Service 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. with Rev. Johnny Bonilla officiating. A second visitation will be on Thursday, May 29, 2025, from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. All services will be held from Ridgelawn Funeral Home 4201 West Ridge Road Gary, Indiana 46408. Interment Ridgelawn Cemetery 4401 West Ridge Road 46408.
