Juan Rafael Ramos

On January 7, 2022, Juan Rafael Ramos, devoted husband and father of three, passed
away at the age of 75. Juan Rafael Ramos was born on May 11, 1946, to Rafael Ramos and
Julia Silva Ramos in Laredo, Texas. Juan proudly served in the United States Navy. He was
discharged in 1969 after his duty on the USS Constellation earning a Defense Ribbon, Vietnam
Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Medal, National Defense
Service Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal. For many years after being discharged, he served
in the Naval Reserve. Shortly after his return home, Juan married his beloved wife Luz (Saida)
Muñiz on October 2, 1971. They raised their children together while Juan worked at US Steel
(US Gary Works). Juan was a machinist for about 20 years, while simultaneously earning a
bachelor’s degree in History at Calumet College of St. Joseph.
Juan was preceded in death by his parents, Rafael Ramos and Julia Silva Ramos; his
sister Ramona Ramos; his sister Elva Ramos-Menges; and his sister Elida Borja. He is survived
by his wife of 50 years Luz (Saida) Ramos; his children John (Ivonne) Ramos, Jaime (Marisol)
Ramos, and Julia (Jewell) Harris; his grandchildren Mercedes Ramos, John Ramos, Juan
Ramos, Dahlia Ramos, Aramee Ramos, Javier Ramos, Saidah Ramos, Jacob Harris, Jackson
Harris, Anthony (Venus) Camacho, Tony Taylor, and André Taylor; his sisters Frances, Zaida,
Isabel, and San Juanita; and his brothers Mario, Porfirio, Rafael, Tomas, Carlos, and Frank; and
several great grandchildren. He also leaves behind extended family, a host of in-laws, nieces,
and nephews.
Juan was full of love, support, and always had the right answers to any question. He
loved to share stories about his Navy days, to surround himself with his grandkids, and nothing
was broken if he was around. One of his favorite pastimes was discussing geology, searching
for rocks, arrowheads, and artifacts. The news has lost their biggest fan as he loved history,
discussing today's politics, and current events. His family will take comfort in carrying his stories
into all of their tomorrows while Juan is at peace.
