Maria S. Gonzalez

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Maria Socorro Gonzalez. At home with family by her side, she peacefully entered eternal rest on March 11, 2025, at the age of 95. Born in Robstown, Texas, she was the daughter of Pablo Gonzalez and Blasa Cassas Gonzalez. Maria was a resident of Whiting, IN. before moving to Highland, IN. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of over 50 years, Antonio Gonzalez; and daughter, Teresa Gonzalez.

Maria had a strong and creative spirit. She was an award- winning metal embossing artist. Her Repujado artwork has been displayed in various galleries. When not working with metal, you could find her addressing the beautiful birthday and greeting cards that we always looked forward to, or spending long hours crocheting gifts for her family, including blankets for her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mom was an avid reader and fiercely independent, she enjoyed taking the bus everywhere-always stopping at the Panaderia in East Chicago to pick up Conchas for her morning coffee, and later we'd hear about the new friends she had met on the bus. Walking into her house, seeing the hung apron and being greeted by the aroma of fresh handmade tortillas; we knew we were home. Making tamales every Christmas Eve with her at the head of the table are memories we will forever cherish.

Maria's unwavering love was the cornerstone of our family, her legacy will live on through her children, Magdalena Sanchez of Whiting, IN; Gilberto (Sylvia) Garcia of Santa Fe, NM; Fernando Garcia of Thornton, CO; Isabel (Angel) Valentine of Homosassa, FL; Amanda (Joe) Acosta of San Antonio, TX; Claudio (Theresa) Gonzalez of Denver, CO; Celzo Gonzalez of Lakewood, CO; Juan (Avenelle) Gonzalez of Rio Rancho, NM; Diego Gonzalez (Sharon) of Whiting, IN; Enrique Gonzalez (Sandy) of Munster, IN; former daughter-in-law, Judy Johnson, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Words can never express the sorrow and void that was left in our lives by the passing of our Mom and Wela, but our solace is knowing that we will embrace again in paradise.

Mom, you are immeasurably missed and eternally loved.

Visitation and celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. with Funeral Service 12:00 p.m.-12:30 p.m. at Ridgelawn Funeral Home 4201 West Ridge Road Gary, Indiana 46408. Interment Ridgelawn Cemetery 4401 West Ridge Road Gary, Indiana 46408.
