Martha Hughes Harris

Martha Hughes Harris was born on August 30, 1925, in Gary, Indiana, to Albert and Geneva Crowe. God called Martha home on December 28, 2024, at her daughter's home in Valparaiso, Indiana.

In 1942, Martha was joined in holy matrimony to John Hughes and they were blessed with three daughters, Diane Hughes Brown, Ramona Hughes, and Carlotta Hughes Holmes.

Martha was a member of Israel CME Church for over thirty years. She was employed by Tiny Tots Laundry as Staff Supervisor for forty years. She was hardworking and enjoyed having fun and listening to music. She loved the outdoors and took great pleasure in tending her yard and plants.

Martha was a loving mother who offered her support, wisdom and love in abundance. She was always there for her children and friends.

In 1980 Martha married Tony Harris who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Willa Byrd, Genieve Cooper, and Deborah Burns; grandson, Carlton Holmes; and stepson, Matt Harris.

In addition to her three daughters, she leaves to cherish her memory: her brother, Fred Crowe; grandson, Damien (Delmeka) Brown; great-granddaughters, Dajamori (Rico) Joseph, and Dior Brown; stepsons, Marrio and Steve Harris; sister of her heart, Bernice Willis; godson, Lonnie Harris; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. 

Visitation will be Monday, January 6, 2024, 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. with Homegoing Services 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. from Ridgelawn Funeral Home 4201 West Ridge Road Gary, Indiana 46408. Interment Ridgelawn Cemetery 4401 West Ridge Road Gary, Indiana 46408.
