Mary Clay-Davis Obituary

Mary E.Clay-Davis was born on January 30, 1937, in Jackson, Mississippi. She was the eighth child of John and Sarah Archie. Mary made her transition to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 29, 2023. She was baptized Catholic at a young age and was a faithful member of Ss. Monica & Luke Church in Gary, Indiana, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister, Altar Guild, the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary, Friends of Bethany, Past President of the VFW, and MOCA Ladies Auxiliary. She always watched prayer  services with Family Christian Center on Wednesday night and Friday morning.

She moved to Chicago with her sister, Millie at the age of twelve. She married Willie Mack Clay on April 25, 1957, until he died in 1999, their union produced four children, Carlos, Jacquelyne, Karen, and William. They also raised their granddaughter, Keyra Clay-Williams. Mary was united in holy matrimony to Burham Davis on July 18, 2015, until he died on February 11, 2017. She worked at St. Margaret Hospital, Substitute and Special Ed Teacher for Gary School System, Managers for RMC and L&B Management until she retired. After retiring she worked for Catholic Charities' Foster Grandparent Program at Thea Bowman School. Mary loved her cat Bernie; and will be truly missed by him. She loved going to the casino at Four Winds, casino trips with her nieces, and loved playing bingo. Mary loved her family dearly, she loved her morning conversations with her niece, Charlene Martin-Tyler.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, John and Sarah Archie; seven brothers, John, Eddie, Luke, DW, Willie Andrew, Leroy, and Arrington; sister, Millie Barnes; her Best Friends/Sisters, Doris Daniels and Martha Washington.

Mary leaves to cherish her four children, Carlos (Ardena) Clay, Sr., Jacquelyne Stewart, Karen Clay of Gary, Indiana, and William (Nitra) Clay, Sr. of Merrillville , Indiana; granddaughter/daughter, Keyra (Terrence) Williams; stepdaughter, Brenda Davis of Jackson, Mississippi; 19 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; brother-in-law, James (Rita) Clay, Sr.; sisters-in-law, Bennye Clay and Sheila Turner of Chicago, Illinois, and Willie Ruth Archie of Gary, Indiana; and a host of other loving family members and precious friends.

Visitation will be held on April 19, 2023 10:00 a.m. -11:00 a.m. with Funeral Services at 11:00 a.m. from Ss. Monica & Luke Church 645 Rhode Island Street Gary, Indiana 46402. Mary will be deeply missed by her loving, devoted family and precious friends.
