Robert Martinez Obituary

Robert C .Martinez was born in Plainview, TX. to Alfonso and Paula Martinez on October 4, 1944. Robert married Rita B. Rodriguez on March 20, 1965, their marriage blossomed into a beautiful 45- year journey and tribute to his achievements. Robert's life is a testament to dedication and the power of a strong foundation with Rita by his side; he persevered to complete his education in his stride for excellence.

Robert's diverse career demonstrated his resilience, adaptability and passion. His career highlights: Rinkenberger Repair Shop, Hebron, IN; Local 81 in Valparaiso, IN;  and Inland Steel in East Chicago, IN. In Robert's early youth at Farming Industries, he'd travel with his family, which serves as a meaningful connection to Robert's display of The "Proud Robstown Cotton Picker" stickers on the bumper of his vehicles and T-shirts honoring his labor and heritage preservation keeping memories alive.

Robert's personal connection with music began when his grandfather taught him how to play guitar at a very young age to learn to his musical roots of Tejano Music: a genre blending Mexican and American influences and Tex-Mex; a genre blending of Texas and Mexican cultures. Robert's passion for music was a vibrant thread throughout his life. As a gifted musician and singer, he brought felicity to those around him through his guitar and electric bass. Robert's musical spirit continues to inspire through family members carrying on his tradition and remembering his performances, his legacy lives on.

Preceded in death by his parents, Alfonso Martinez and Paula Garces; his wife, Rita B. Martinez; brothers, Julian Martinez and Richard Martinez; sister, Yoland Garces; and grandson, Corderro Martinez.

Robert leaves behind a lasting cherished legacy of love, laughter and memories etched in the hearts of his five children; Alfonso R. (Lydia) Martinez, Teresa (Raul) Sotelo, Monica (Frank) Perez, Paulina (Manuel) Mendoza, and Gina Martinez; 19 grandchildren; Alfonso O. Martinez, Robert J. Martinez, Claudia N. Martinez, Marisa Sotelo, Ernesto R. Sotelo, Jasmine N. Perez, Frank R. Perez, William R. Perez, Angel Martinez, Ariel S. Menchaca, Julian J. Garza, Anthony A. Arizmendez, Alyna T. Arizmendez, Angelyna J. Arizmendez, Manuel Mendoza, Jr., Consuelita R. Perez, Kasara J. Perez, Rose M. Perez, and Pedro A. Perez, Jr., ; 20 great-grandchildren; 4 siblings, Lucia Rodriguez, Dalia Elkins, Anita Davila, and Alicia (Joe) Auinaga; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Robert passed away peacefully at home in Lake Station, surrounded by his loving family. He will forever be remembered for his captivating charm, dashing good looks and infectious humor. Inspired by his musical talents and soulful singing. Also his guiding wisdom, "Work smarter not harder". His remarkable Spirit talents and love will continue to resonate in our hearts. May his memory be a blessing to all who loved him.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at Ridgelawn Funeral Home 4201 West Ridge Road Gary, Indiana 46408. 1:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. with additional Visitation on Friday, November 15, 2024, from 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. with Father Lou Pasala. Interment to follow at Ridgelawn Cemetery 4401 West Ridge Road Gary, Indiana 46408.
