Sara S. (Spikner) Williams

Sara S. Williams had a graceful passage after 90 years on Sunday, May 1, 2022, in Indianapolis, IN.  Born in Chicago, Illinois on March 27, 1932 (Easter Day) to Addie Powell Spikner and Pero Retinue Spikner, she was the youngest of six children.

With a family legacy devoted to educational excellence, she earned a Master’s Degree from DePaul University, Chicago, and launched her career as the first African American teacher at The Miller School with decades of service with Beveridge School, Gary Indiana. 

A resident of Gary since 1961 with her husband Archie Williams Jr. (deceased 2008), she joined her daughters Denise Elizabeth and Sara Patrice in Indianapolis in 2018. Mrs. Sara S. Williams was a faithful member of St. Timothy Church March birthday group and Goldtymers. With 35 years of dedicated service to hundreds of students in special education teaching and reading development, she retired from the Gary Community School system.  A devoted member of the Delta Sigma Theta Gary Alumnae Chapter, Phi Delta Kappa, and Gary Arts Council, Mrs. Sara Williams was best known for her captivating smile, big heart, commitment to God, and her phenomenal collection of angels.

  Mrs. Sara S. Williams is survived by daughters Denise Elizabeth Williams and Sara Patrice Williams as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and heart felt friends.  Services will be held on Monday, May 9, 2022, 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. with Homegoing Services 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. from  Ridgelawn Funeral Home 4201 W. Ridge Road, Gary, Indiana with Rev. Dr. Rameen Jackson, officiating, Pastor of St. Timothy Community Church Gary, Indiana.   Memorial contributions to St. Timothy Community Church, Gary in her name are encouraged.
