Tori (Johnson) Garner

Tori Garner (Johnson) was born on October 26, 1952. She was born in East Chiago, Indiana, to the late Richard Johnson (Margaret) and Marlene Lucas. Tori was raised in Gary, IN. by her father and grandmother, Sudie Mae Perry "Mama", whom she loved dearly. Thelma "Tootsie" Cunningham who was her father's first cousin who was also a cherished and guiding force in Tori's life. Tori moved to East Chicago and was married to the love of her life, Lawrence (Tudy) Garner for 34 years. Tori worked for the School City of East Chicago and retired after 25 years. She was dedicated and loved working with children in the classroom and enjoyed being a part of their journey. Tori also enjoyed building relationships and collaborating with the students'' families. Tori would also volunteer time during the summer for the Summer School program to help with the enrichment of the student's lives and growth.

Tori loved to spend time with her family and loved them dearly. She would cook big meals, decorate for the holidays, and host gatherings at home with the family. "Tudy's and Tori's house" was the place to be and everyone was welcomed. She also had a love for reading and gardening.

Tori passed away peacefully with family by her side on April 29, 2026. Tori is survived by her children, Shawn Brown, and Janae Garner- (Michael) Levin; grandchildren, Deondre Denham, Shantenay Brown, and Malik Levin; great-granddaughter, Aria Brown; brothers, Richard (Tonya) Johnson, and Lance Johnson; goddaughter, Ashley Ramos, and special friend, Brenda Winfield; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins who meant a lot to her. 

She is preceded in death by her father; mother; great-grandmother; husband, Lawrence Garner; son, Anthony "Tony" Brown; grandchild, Micah Levin; and special cousin, Joni Jacques.

Tori leaves to cherish fond memories and will be dearly missed. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, (Yaya), daughter, sister, and auntie. Tori shined with so much grace. She was the strong one for everyone, who had so much wisdom, and an unwavering force. She had a heart of gold and made everyone feel loved and welcomed. She always knew the right thing to say.

Ma, thank you for not only being the best mom, but for being my best friend. You were always there for us no matter what, and even through our adulthood and for my family. There are no perfect words for such a perfect person. I am so thankful for the bond and love we had. We talked countless times every single day. You and Malik "Leek Leek" had your morning and night routine talks with affirmations and prayers since he was a toddler. I am so thankful for our close bond and thankful for always telling you how much you mean to me. Thank you for all of the wonderful memories. Thank you for all the encouragement and endless love. Hand in hand. "Loving you was food to my soul" Love always and forever, your daughter, Janae.
