Verdell Davis (Junior), age 68, passed away August, 23, 2020. He was born September 1, 1951, in Gary, IN. He accepted Christ at a very early age of seven at Jerusalem Baptist Church in Gary, IN. Verdell was a hard worker. He worked while he was in High School at the age of 16 at Inland Steel on the weekends. His love for sports began at an early age and followed him throughout his life. In High School, he lettered in football and basketball- only to excel in both. He graduated from Horace Mann in 1971. After graduation, he attended Langston University in Oklahoma on a Basketball scholarship. After leaving college, he became gainfully employed at Inland Steel for 45 years (started out in Open Heart #3 and retired at Arcelor Mittal Indiana Harbor). Verdell married Diane Culver and from this union one child was born Verdell Silk Davis, III, Verdell was a very devoted father, coach and mentor. In his past time, he enjoyed landscaping, exercising and being a sports enthusiast. Preceded in death by his wife, Diane, parents, Omega and Verdell Davis, Sr., brother, Jerome Davis, sister, Carman Ware, brother-in-law, Squire Dixon and very special aunt, Aggernora McDaniel Sumerall. Verdell leaves to share his memories with his son, Verdell (Yolanda) Davis of Meridian , MS, four grandchildren, Skylar Davis, India Davis, Ledarrius Brewer and Tyron Brewer, brothers, Tyrone Davis, Brian Davis, sisters, Donna Dixon, Pamela (Kenneth) Stalling all of Gary, IN,and Candis (Roger) Cummings of Lansing, MI, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation Saturday, August 29, 2020, 9:00 am-10:00 am with Homegoing Services at 10:00 am from Ridgelawn Funeral Home 4201 West Ridge Road, Gary, IN. Pastor Dwight A. Gardner, officiating.
