Viola Brooks was born on October 29, 1930, in Opelika, Alabama, to the late James Charles Lowe, Sr., and Rachel Lowe. Viola had 9 siblings. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Gary, Indiana in 1950.
Viola was a faithful member of St. Luke A.M.E. Zion Church. In addition to her membership, Viola was also a proud member of her church's Senior Choir and Missionary Board.
Viola was a proud member of the Red Velvet Ladies and Magnificent Ladies Chapter of The Red Hatters Society, Gary, Indiana. Through this affiliation, Viola upheld the values of fun, friendship, freedom, fitness and fulfillment of lifelong dreams.
Viola was employed at the Calumet Township Trustee Office, as an Order Writer Supervisor and retired after over 40 years of service.
Viola was preceded in death by her loving parents, James Charles Lowe, Sr., and Rachel Lowe; her siblings, Jim Jr., Rachel, William, George, Dorothy, Walter, and Janie.
Viola leaves to cherish the memory of her: 3 children, Janet Brooks-Marshall of Cedar Lake, Indiana, Wendy-Brooks-Strange of Cordova, Tennessee, and Roosevelt Sr. (Brenda) Leslie of Crown Point, Indiana; goddaughter, Valerie Hines of Southfield, Michigan; 4 grandchildren, Dale (Kelli) Marshall of Indianapolis, Indiana, Tayan Marshall (Richard) McDowell of Avon, Indiana, Brian (Nikisha) Marshall of Cedar Lake, Indiana, and Brandon Strange, Sr. of Gary, Indiana; 9 great-grandchildren, Kayla Marshall of Indianapolis, Indiana, Kristopher Marshall of Indianapolis, Indiana, Bryce McDowell of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Sierra McDowell of Avon, Indiana, Sydney McDowell of South Euclid, Ohio, Nina Marshall of Merrillville, Indiana, Noah Marshall of Cedar Lake, Indiana and Brandon Strange, Jr. of Gary, Indiana, Brendon Strange of Gary, Indiana; brother, John (Irma) Lowe of Merrillville, Indiana; special nieces, Brenda Leslie of Crown Point, Indiana, and Gloria Person of Gary, Indiana; special friends, Jamesetta and Henry Meadows, and Mary Hunter; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
