Walter C. Peters, Jr. passed away peacefully on April 8, 2022 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Hobart, Indiana, with his wife and daughter by his side.
He lived 90 wonderful years ! Walter was born in Gary, Indiana, to Walter Carl Peters, Sr. and Edith Nystrom Peters. He lived in the Ambridge Area of Gary until he moved to Portage in 1968. He was a graduate of Horace Mann High School and then taught accordion in Gary, Indiana, until he became a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service where he delivered mail on a walking route in the Tolleston area of Gary, walking 8 miles a day for 35 years before retiring in 1998.
He was an avid Lionel train collector which led to his granddaughter, Ryann naming him "Grandpa Choo Choo", which is what they always called him.
Walter was a very talented musician playing the accordion, organ, and piano, as recently as a few weeks ago. He played professionally for many years in various bands and events including the Raddison Hotel events in Merrillville, Indiana. He volunteered to play whenever and wherever he was asked bringing much joy to people hearing his music. Walter attended Grace Nazarene Church in Portage, Indiana.
Walter is preceded in death by his parents; and his beloved dog, Max.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 35 years, Patricia Peters of Portage; daughter, Stacey (Scott) Karras of Lowell, Indiana; son, Todd Peters of Chicago, Illinois; stepdaughters, Temple (Jerry) Kipper of Walkerton, Indiana, Becky (Darin) Floyd of Scituate, Massachusetts; grandchildren, Ryann, Allie (Hank) and Kole Karras, Emily Kipper, Lauren (Ryan) King, Brandon, Catherine (Blake), Kendall Stout, Makenna and Dolan Floyd; great-grandchildren, Rhett, Lilah, and Lane, and a host of other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, Dad would want you to donate to a charity of your choice in remembrance of him.
