William Anthony Lowe was born in East Chicago, Indiana, on April 6, 1951, to his parents, Thad and Lula Lowe. He lived his entire childhood on Block Avenue in the Harbor, and he attended Eugene Field Elementary and Washington High Schools.
William enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 17. At the age of 18, he fought and was wounded in the Vietnam War. William was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, a solemn distinction given to service members injured in combat in recognition of their great sacrifice. William's sacrifice included lifetime physical and emotional disabilities due to wounds suffered on the battlefield.
After serving in the Army, William was determined to live his life to the fullest despite the disabilities resulting from war injuries. He attended and graduated with a Bachelors Degree from Bishop College in Texas. There he met his wife, Rita McMullen.
After obtaining his Bachelors Degree, William was admitted to the University of Kansas School of Law, where he graduated with a Juris Doctorate Degree.
While William lived most of his adult life in East Chicago, later in his life he decided to move to Alabama and build a home on 100 acres of land acquired by his grandfather in 1914. He lived the remainder of his life in Alabama.
William loved his family and was a loving uncle to his many nieces and nephews.
William passed away on July 1, 2022. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thad and Lula Lowe; his sisters, Obie and Mary; and his brother, Thad Douglas.
William is survived by his wife, Rita McMullen Lowe; his sisters, Delores, Angie, and Thaddis (Scott Melnik); his brothers, Carlton and Phillip; and by many loving nieces and nephews; great- nieces and nephews; loving cousins; and many other relatives. William is also survived by his lifelong friend and fellow Vietnam Veteran, George "Tommy" Copeland, Jr., as well as his many other friends.
Visitation will be Monday, August 1, 2022, 11:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. with Memorial Services 12:00 p.m. -1:00 p.m. from Ridgelawn Funeral Home 4201 West Ridge Road Gary, Indiana 46408. Military Honor Burial immediately following services at Ridgelawn Cemetery.
