Willie D Abernathy

Mr. Willie D. Abernathy, age 83, of East Chicago, Indiana, passed away on Friday, February 11, 2022.  He was born on September 16, 1938, in East Chicago, Indiana to Jake and Beatrice (Milsap) Abernathy

He was a graduate of Washington High School. He was employed by Inland Steel (currently Cleveland Cliffs) as Continuous Caster Operator for thirty-eight years of loyal and dedicated service.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.  Willie loved fishing and hunting for squirrels with his sons and grandsons.  He was passionate about working in their yard and planting flowers with his wife.  He liked mowing his lawn and sitting on the porch to admire his work.

Willie was definitely one of a kind and something else.  If you know you know ! He had a generous heart and will be truly missed by anyone and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Willie is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Odeaner Brown Abernathy; two daughters, Almeta Abernathy and Pamela (Cecil) Douglas; two sons, Douglas (Vavica) Abernathy and Darwyn Abernathy; sister, Shirley Comer; eight grandchildren, Arika (Shawn) Ealy, Alexia Schell, Donovan (Shawna) Abernathy, Austin Williams, Jayda Young, Caleb Douglas, Logan (Hannah) Abernathy, and Noah Douglas; fourteen great-grandchildren, Alivia, Denali, Audin, Aria, Julian, James, Jacob, Zoe, Dragan, Zion, Samya, Ja'el, Jayce, and August; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Musette Elliott; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Abernathy; and great-granddaughter, Alora Scott.

Visitation will be Saturday, February 19, 2022 10:00 a.m.- 11:00 a.m. with Homegoing Services 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. from Ridgelawn Funeral Home 4201 West Ridge Road Gary, Indiana.  Interment Ridgelawn Cemetery.
